Just under 5 years will have passed since the previous release of the highly esteemed old school death metal band Obliteration –with their monstrous concoction that is ‘Black Death Horizons’. Obliteration, hailing from Kolbotn, Norway (along with similar acts such as Darkthrone, Aura Noir, Nekromantheon to name a few), releases their fourth full-length album 19th of October 2018. The album, which bears the title ‘Cenotaph Obscure’, indubitably serves as an impeccable successor. Their conceptual ideas present to us lyrics of otherworldly beings, depictions of deep catacombs, dank cellars, and inexhaustible stenches of charneland death. Obliteration were never about the rosy red futures of mankind, but rather a search for and contemplation of the horrifying beauty of the undesirable and dreadful concepts of the world. This meshes beautifully with the hauntingly obeliskoid and relentless voice of their singer Sindre Solem, the charring and fierce lead guitars, and in the end borne aloft by the deep and grounded rhythm section of the bass and drums.
