C’est en Californie, à Venice Beach plus précisément, qu’est né Suicidal Tendencies. Le groupe se forme en 1982 alors que son chanteur Mike Muir est encore étudiant. Si à ses débuts le groupe fait parler de lui, ce n’est malheureusement pas toujours pour sa musique (rumeurs d’appartenance à des gangs, controverse autour de son nom…). Heureusement pour la clique, tout cela finit par jouer en sa faveur, sa notoriété se faisant grandissante. En 1983, Suicidal Tendencies sort un premier album éponyme. Enorme carton : le succès public est au rendez-vous et le titre « Institutionalized » est diffusé sur MTV. Suicidal Tendencies devient alors l’un des premiers groupes de hardcore à être diffusé sur la chaîne américaine.
