With the ability to absorb light arms fire, crush barbed wire defenses, and traverse enemy trenches, while maintaining steady return fire; 32 British Mark I tanks were successfully deployed to advance on the German positions across the endless smoke and fire between the combatants’ entrenchments. The Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux on the 24th of April, 1918 marked the first tank vs tank battle when 3 German A7V tanks engaged 3 British Mark IV tanks on the battlefield.
