BO NINGEN - Minimal (Official Video)

BO NINGEN are pleased to reveal a collaboration with Italo-Australian video artist Rebecca Salvadori in the form of an experimental new piece of video art for their latest single ‘Minimal’. Kohhei Matsuda said: “The main focus when working together was about creating a dialogue between each of us and artist/director Rebecca Salvadori. She individually interviewed us about the song, the album, the artwork, and everything in between. Then she wove the results into something like a collective subconsciousness.” “In terms of the visual representation, Rebecca’s baroque use of lighting and the figures resonates with my idea of ‘Still Life’ painting, on which the album artwork is based. Overall, working with her was rather fluent and we are very happy with the result. I believe we’ve made something that can shake the boundary between music video/documentary/video art, and this cross-boundary attitude is what we, as a band, have been aiming for on this record.”

London-based Japanese alternative-rock band BO NINGEN are pleased to reveal a collaboration with Italo-Australian video artist Rebecca Salvadori in the form of an experimental new piece of video art for their latest single ‘Minimal’, which is out now.

The track itself features a guest vocal appearance from Bobby Gillespie of Scottish rock icons Primal Scream, and is the latest single to be taken from their new album Sudden Fictions, which is out now on Alcopop! Records, available from: http://www.ilovealcopop.co.uk

Commenting on the collaboration, guitarist Kohhei Matsuda said: “The main focus when working together was about creating a dialogue between each of us and artist/director Rebecca Salvadori. She individually interviewed us about the song, the album, the artwork, and everything in between. Then she wove the results into something like a collective subconsciousness.”

“In terms of the visual representation, Rebecca’s baroque use of lighting and the figures resonates with my idea of ‘Still Life’ painting, on which the album artwork is based. Overall, working with her was rather fluent and we are very happy with the result. I believe we’ve made something that can shake the boundary between music video/documentary/video art, and this cross-boundary attitude is what we, as a band, have been aiming for on this record.”

A video artist based in London, Salvadori has a lengthy career of filming environments with a focus on non-hierarchical/chronological layering and sequencing of audio to footage. Her works act as constellations of highly personal and wilfully elusive heterogeneous elements: multifaceted portraits of moments, people and environments that can be approached from different angles as they move in between personal and transpersonal scales.

Of the inspiration behind her work and the new piece for the band, she says: “I still have strong memories of my first Bo Ningen live concert and how it affected me—it must have been 2010/2011. I felt an immediate connection, and somehow knew I was going to work with them at some point in time. A few years later I was projecting my animations as visuals for their album launch as well as directing a video for their single ‘Nichijou’ featuring Jenny Beth from Savages.”

“Over the years many things have changed in the way I make videos and work with musicians. The one-to-one relationship between myself and the subjects is central and intimacy is a very present feeling. The desire is that of entering inner worlds and portraying a real exchange and moment in time.  Shooting at night, with little lighting, has worked to create unique moments and to construct autonomous portraits as well as individual body movements. I also find it very important to challenge the boundaries between video formats and let different elements dictate ideas of time and structure. Just like ‘Minimal’ might represent one of the facets of the Sudden Fictions album, the film contains fragments of different tracks and different atmospheres—simple but also complex at the same time.”

Salvadori has exhibited her audio/visual work at venues and festivals such as South London Gallery (UK), НИИ niimoscow Science & Art (RUS), Macro Museum of Contemporary Art (IT), Barbican Art Center (UK), Festival of Film and Animation Olomouc (CZ), Festival IMAGES(CH), Crosstalk video art Festival (HU), David Lynch’s Silencio (FR), SCHNUCK Glaspalais (NL), Sophiensaele Theatre (DE), Future Everything Festival Manchester (UK), III Point Festival Miami (US), No Bounds Festival x Warp Records (UK), Camden Arts Centre on Cork Street (UK), Cafe Oto (UK), Freud Museum (UK).
