The Sigit - Detourn (2013) (Full Album)
Probably their most explorative and prominent release yet, Detourn sets the bar for what 4-piece The Sigit can offer to the ever living rock scene in Indonesia. Hailing from Bandung, Indonesia. 11 tracks, laid out so beautifully and mesmerizing, pumps incredibly well thought tunes; although still keeping their straightforward rock business down and dirty. Most would simply think of it as a really good in-your-face kind of rock record, but after more than a listen, they would hear how different these lads sound compared to VIP. They matured, got harder, and bolder. Much, much bolder. “Détourné” as an opening track sets the tone for the whole experience, with the sound of a church organ opening, followed with awkward signature melodies, and into the classic Sigit tone. The Floyd-ish sax part caught me off guard, and was a pleasant surprise. “Let The Right One In” is probably the most familiar song to the ears of the old fans, and is the definitive Sigit sound.
“Son of Sam” and “Gate of 15th” shows how they experiment with different pace and sound, while still keeping their sound familiar. The flute part in Gate of 15th is also another shocker. “Tired Eyes” is probably my favorite, next to “Conundrum” and “Détourné”. First, because its “You will bang your heads” kind of song; second, Rekti totally pulled the howling part in the beginning it sends shivers to my spine; third, that riffage was completely classy; and fourth, the solo. How can you not love that part? It was serious eargasm. “Owl and Wolf” was a nice slow touch that showed balance in the album, along with the voodoo-ish “Red Summer”, but those song kinda felt like fillers. Brilliant fillers. “Black Summer” felt like summer. It’s one of those songs that would sound really good on the wide open road. Hell, the whole album would sound really good on wide open roads. The ending part of Black Summer was really, really good. It felt really sad and genuine, one of my favorite moments of the album.
“Cognition” feels like Led Zep ala The Sigit. Conundrum is the perfect ending to the album. It’s a beautifully orchestrated play of delay, distortion, vocals, and dynamics. Reminded me a lot of The Fall of Troy, but somewhat more raw and powerful. The second verse’s play on vocal arrangement is something you have to experience yourselves, because it is simply beautiful, and throws you off when Rekti began finishing that part. The ending was definitely the crown jewel of the song, and the perfect outro of the album. Bravo guys, Bravo. Overall, Detourn is an epic. It’s dynamic, emotional, beautiful. An Incredible album, by an incredible band. Although it’s pretty experimental, its by no means bland. It’s the classic Sigit experience, only amplified, and cranked to eleven.
