Port Nocturnal was started September 2015 in Sioux City, Iowa by Zach Pickens (guitar), Seth Wozny (vox), Grace Claeys (drums), Spencer Aspleaf (guitar) and Alex Emery (Bass) later resigned and was replaced by Layne Medema. The band's sound can be described as a postmodern Midwestern Desert Rock, with elements of Blues, Psychedelic, Progressive/Art Rock and improvisational music ala jazz informing their grooves and timbres. As a man of many talents; gifted drummer, guitarist, bassist, and songwriter (remember Kyuss' “Green Machine?” Yeah, that was him.), Bjork also had huge potential for a fruitful and enjoyable solo career. So, perhaps inevitably, following his departure from Kyuss after their opus release Welcome to Sky Valley, Bjork quickly began work on his first solo release. Jalamanta is the result of a creatively free mind working at the best and freshest of it's ability. With all this talk of stoner rock band Kyuss, it would be easy to get the wrong impression about this album. Jalamanta does not take it's cues from thunderous distorted riffs or angry, strained vocals; it is dominated by winding bass grooves, semi-clean guitar licks and driving drum beats. The Native Howl features banjos, harmonicas and various other hollow wooden instruments, but it isn't a country band and it isn't folk. It also isn't, despite its twang, an Americana or roots-music outfit. Instead, the Rochester quartet brews up a furious hybrid of thrash metal and bluegrass on "Thrash Grass," its new EP, which delivers bluegrass as you've never heard it before. Singer-guitarist Alex Holycross started out playing folk with banjoist-vocalist Jake Sawicki as both were finishing college. Holycross studied music at Oakland University, while Sawicki studied electrical engineering at Michigan State. The Native Howl congealed when Mark Chandler and Joshua LeMeiux, both professional musicians and songwriters, joined on bass and drums respectively.
