Periphery - CHVRCH BVRNER (Live Drum Playthrough)

Hi guys! Matt here! This is a performance of CHVRCH BVRNER from our current tour. I wasn’t going to post this because I actually think it’s pretty sloppy in places, as I was still trying to dial in my live performance of this song. You can practice all day, but when you get on stage and adrenaline takes over, it’s a whole new ball game, and this video is a great reflection of that. In fact, the reason why I’m choosing to post this is because it’s a completely real, live performance, fueled entirely by excitement, emotion, energy, and adrenaline, and despite small mistakes here and there, I’m actually really stoked on this, because when I watch it I can see clearly that I’m having a shit ton of fun, and that, is what it’s all about. I teach this in my classes - to me, it’s so much more fun, exciting, important, and impressive, to see a drummer let go, have fun, and get lost completely in the performance, rather than worry about every pattern, every part, and every hit within every measure they play. This job is supposed to be fun, not stressful, and if I worried about every note, my performances would be miserable - not only for me, but for the audience. I’d be in my own head, thinking about every note, rather than just simply being in the moment, being present, and physically becoming the performance, and the audience would certainly be able to tell the difference. I’m not always perfect at achieving this, and I get in my own head all of the time, but I always try to remind myself to “be” where my ass is seated - to be present with the show! Be on stage, interact with my band mates, interact with the audience, and just have fun! This is an awesome job, and it shouldn’t be unnecessarily stressful for anyone. Have a good time, be present, and leave it all on the stage - that’s always my goal, and I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for reading!
